*POSITION SUMMARY:*
Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision custom parts.
Position also entails loading material and/or parts into machine, cycling machine, detecting malfunctions in machine operations such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
Reports defective or questionable conditions to the department supervisor.
Run custom parts or production lots as required per engineering drawings, communicate with co-workers and supervisory staff regarding production runs or custom jobs, and maintain a safe, organized, and clean station area.
May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
This position works in a team environment and has to read engineering prints and micrometers.
Responsible for ensuring products meet precise specifications, performing first piece inspections, quality workmanship, and adherence to safety standards and company policies.
*RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:* 1.
Set up, adjust, and operate all machine’s basic tooling as well as any specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
2.
Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
3.
Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machine tools.
4.
Calculate dimensions and tolerances applying shop mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and Vernier calipers.
5.
Monitor feeds and speeds of machine tool(s) during machining process.
Responsible for running tooling at proper feeds and speeds.
This also means that if a programming error is recognized, it needs to be addressed and/or corrected promptly.
6.
Program computers or electronic instruments such as numerically controlled machine tools (e.
g.
setting controls to regulate machining or entering commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media).
7.
Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and assure specification compliance using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers.
This includes performance of mandatory first piece inspections.
8.
Complete inspection reports and initial.
Each individual machinist is responsible for completing and initialing his/her own inspection report (e.
g.
each shift machinist fills out his/her own report).
9.
Help keep operational and supply costs down by using regrinds whenever possible.
10.
Must fully de-burr all parts you have produced using your machine time to perform this task in an effort to help with streamlining flow of jobs through manufacturing and shop processes.
11.
Follow all in-process inspection procedures.
12.
Responsible for first part inspection from any production run by submitting that part to an inspector prior to running any more parts.
13.
Follow work center dispatch reports to keep jobs on schedule.
14.
Review job traveler for start date and respective machining times.
15.
Initial the operation line on job traveler(s) if you are the machinist/operator completing that particular operation signifying completion of that particular operation.
16.
When time allows, offer assistance to coworkers or run/operate another machine tool.
17.
Must be able to maintain tolerance and finishes to engineering and manufacturing specifications.
18.
Must be proficient at reading precision measuring instruments.
19.
Performs set-up for all types of jobs.
20.
Performs basic maintenance of shop equipment as required.
21.
Operation of forklifts and overhead cranes as well as other typical shop material handling.
22.
When required, assumes some responsibility for all training, mentoring and skill development of shop talent.

customers) by keeping radios at moderate volume levels and turned off during break periods when machine tooling noise is at its minimum.
· Maintain an appropriately clean working station to include machine tooling as well as wiping down if time allows.
Your area and machine tool should be as clean as possible, left in respectable condition, and prepared for following shift machinist to take over.
· Maintain a team attitude and approach to daily work practices, coworkers, and management as occasions can occur when you may be requested and expected to perform duties in other areas or serving in other capacities as needed.
· Wear proper safety equipment (e.
g.
safety glasses, hearing protection, safety boots or shoes, etc.
).
· Must put all specialty tooling away when done using it and report any damaged specialty tooling to your immediate supervisor so it can be replaced promptly.
· Communicate to following shift machinist any relevant information specific to job traveler to keep traveler information current and correct.

) · Communicate effectively, timely, and clearly with next shift machinist regarding work or specific job related items (e.
g.
explain job thoroughly to person on following shift).
· Must accurately report all time on jobs meaning you are accountable for clocking in and out on any jobs you are given to perform on.
